What is abstraction in photography?
Abstraction in my view is photography, sometimes called non-objective, experimental, conceptual or concrete photography, is a means of depicting a visual image that does not have an immediate association with the object world and that has been created through the use of photographic equipment, processes or materials.
More or less abstract sequence of images with explanation.
In this lesson me & Sarah where told to order our photos from fully abstract to not really abstract without knowing the meaning so here is what we come out with. We thought it was ordered like this because of how unusual the photos are so the first image is unusual because theres pegs pegged to her ears and hair/head and the last photo is there because you dot know what it is so its just an questionable image.
Photo Shoot
In this lesson we had some time to go out and photograph what we think abstract photos would look like around the school without knowing what abstract fully meant in terms of photographs.

The Formal Elements in photography
Focus:
Light: Line: Repetition: Shape: Space: Texture: Value/Tone: |
Which areas appear clearest or sharpest in the photograph? Which do not?
Which areas of the photograph are brightest? Are there any shadows? Does the photograph allow you to guess the time of day? Is the light natural or artificial? Harsh or soft? Reflected or direct? Are there objects in the photograph that act as lines? Are they straight, curvy, thin, thick? Do the lines create direction in the photograph? Do they outline? Do the lines show movement or energy? Are there any objects, shapes or lines which repeat and create a pattern? Do you see geometric (straight edged) or organic (curvy) shapes? Which are they? Is there depth to the photograph or does it seem shallow? What creates this appearance? Are there important negative (empty) spaces in addition to positive (solid) spaces? Is there depth created by spatial illusions i.e. perspective? If you could touch the surface of the photograph how would it feel? How do the objects in the picture look like they would feel? Is there a range of tones from dark to light? Where is the darkest value? Where is the lightest? |
Focus photo shoot
In this photo shoot my main focus is abstraction and the formal elements, so here we have some photos i took over the weekend and around in school. Here I have a mixture of abstract photos and non abstract of the 20 selected images and in this photo shoot my main objective is FOCUS
e.g- which areas appear clearest or sharpest in the photograph? Which do not?
e.g- which areas appear clearest or sharpest in the photograph? Which do not?
In this homework i took photos around my house and was focused on one formal element which was lines. I chose lines because they really bring out the image instead of a flat boring image you can make it more popping by added different shaped lines and coloured lines to make the image shine. Also there are a lot of lined objects in my house so they where easy for me to find.
Photogram Collage
In this lesson we where given multiple different of scrap photograms and cutting tools and glue to make an photogram collage, i was going for a really weird collage so i just got loads of different pieces and teared them and cut them for a werid look and this was my outcome.

Photo Shoot
In this homework I was looking at many different things e.g. close ups, different angles and blurriness so i went around my house and was thinking carefully about the images I was going to photograph and these where my outcomes.
Artist Research:
Dafna Talmor
Describe what you can see (as accurately as possible)
I see a seaside, the tide is out there are multiple rocks and inside the picture has been duplicated and split up into different pieces and places there what looks like the image is burnt in some areas, the sand has imprints in it the image looks like its been built. What does the title "constructed landscapes' suggest about how these pictures were made? "construct" build or make something "landscapes" all the visible features of an area of land, often considered in terms of their aesthetic appeal. It's suggesting they made visible features of the area of land Why might the artist piece together photographs of different locations? This photo doesn't look like it has different locations it just looks like its been copied and cut out in different shapes then merged together to make this. |

Dafna Talmor Workshop
Talmor went through many different stages in her life and many different genres as well but for her final stage of her career is making these unusual projected slideshows which have many different other images and then project them and she has her final outcome.
Whilst doing the workshop we had a range of different materials, tools and resources available. 35mm slides, lightboxes, cutting mats, scalpels, hole punches, sellotape, coloured cellophane, highlighter pens etc.

Final Images
These are my final images that I chose for my game i chose to do them in black and white so they are more difficult to work out and make my playing audience use there skills and try figure them out. I done them quiet up close to the object to they was more unusual and unclear to identify.
Saul Leiter Quotation Homework
I found this Saul Leiter quotation:
a window covered with raindrops interests me more than a photograph of a famous person.
Saul Leiter is really not interested in today's craze over seeing celebrities, all he cares about is having a camera in his hand, and doing his own thing and that's the mindset everyone should have if they want to succeed in life and not a lot of people have that type of mindset and think everything is going to be easy and accomplishable . Another quotation is ''he's allow us to learn to look and see, you begin to see things you'd never paid attention to''. If you think about it he's making us notice it's not all about social media there's more to life then looking at a screen from as soon as you wake up to the very last moment when you fall asleep at night.
Saul Leiter
Leiter was an American photographer and painter and a early pioneer of colour photograph. He worked on something we would ignore for example raindrops on a window too an old fashioned car. He liked to with colours because they stand out from the other photographers.
My Saul Leiter Paintings
In class today we were given a task to recreate our own version of Saul Leiters work using paint and cartridge paper. We used water colour to paint to contrast with his work as he likes to take pictures which are not as clear because they are though class windows with water droplets. I tried to create 3 of his pieces of his pieces of work .
